Targa

Targa is a female Asian elephant who has spent her entire life confined at zoos and circuses in the United States. Four generations of her family have lived and died in captivity. Targa is currently held captive at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo along with her daughter Mali, grandsons Tukada and Yaad, and four other adult elephants, where they are forced to endure harsh winters, including snow and freezing temperatures. All eight elephants are crammed into an exhibit allegedly containing a total of 7 acres, comprising an elephant barn, a water feature, a yard, and other holding and maintenance facilities. It is unclear how much usable space they have. The zoo forces reproductive age elephants to participate in a captive breeding program and has a history of separating bonded elephants and calves from their mothers at a young age.

Kimba

Kimba was born in 1977 in Kruger National Park in South Africa and is approximately 46 years old. Captured and imported to the US in 1980 when she was three, she spent her first year at the still operational International Animal Exchange in Michigan, which assists zoos and governments with animal acquisition and transport. From there, she was transferred to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo along with Lucky. According to the zoo she is prone to colic.

Kirkja

0 Years old | Ohio

Kirkja is a female African elephant born at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium on February 17, 2024 to two wild-born elephants who never met. Initially thought to be a male, and named Kirk, the zoo discovered three months after her birth that she was a female and renamed her Kirkja. She is housed in an environment wholly unsuited for elephants: an exhibit slightly larger than an acre, together with three other elephants (her mother, an unrelated adult male, and an adult female). Nothing about Kirkja’s unnatural zoo existence bears any resemblance to what an elephant’s life should look like.
